Situated on an inlet from Falmouth harbour, St Mawes is an old fishing port with quaint narrows lanes leading up from the busy quayside. St Mawes castle is one of a pair that was constructed in the 16th century by Henry XIII to guard the safe anchorage in the Carrick Roads. The other, Pendennis Castle, sits opposite in the harbour town of Falmouth and from either the views are glorious. Over the years their guns and bastions have served as a strong defense, but nowadays the castles offer peaceful gardens, historic exhibitions and are a popular tourist attraction for visitors to Cornwall.
